19:00 - 23:00

Our future is tied to the ocean. Its shared seas connect us through food, culture and sport. The home of amazing, abundant life, it’s also a powerful climate solution. Yet the practice of bottom trawling threatens to destroy this precious resource—bulldozing our ocean floor, undermining small-scale fisheries and deepening the climate crisis.

Join us for a conversation with activists, artists and environmental groups and learn how to volunteer your professional skills to help tackle the most pressing issues we face today.

Speaker

Nikki Spil

OBE – TV Presenter, Diversity Expert & Award-winning Author

Hi, I am Nikki Spil, born and bred in North Holland. As a kid, and still today, I like nothing more than to cycle through the dunes at the end of the day,
have a picnic with the sand between my toes and watch the sun go down on the beach. I get so much from being by the sea and I want it to remain a treasured place for future generations.
I have studied sustainability and how to apply it to the design and development of new products which I apply to my work as architect specialising in the design of sustainable buildings. That said, my greatest passion which I jump out of bed for, remains growing seaweed and by far the best thing that I have ever built is a seaweed farm.

Speaker

Emilie Reuchlin

OBE – TV Presenter, Diversity Expert & Award-winning Author

Doggerland co-founder Emilie Reuchlin has worked on international marine conservation and specifically North Sea for the past 16 years. She proposed and advocated for a North Sea network of Marine Protected Areas, fought off the construction of massive energy islands on the Dogger Bank and pioneered restoring oyster reefs in the North Sea: she is involved from creating the idea to seeing things through to full implementation. Emilie builds conservation stamina and keeps inspired through swimming, diving and surfing her preferred habitat: the North Sea. Her education includes a BA Political Science from the University of Amsterdam, MSc. Environment and Resource Management from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and MSc. Marine Biology from Dalhousie University.

Marta Cavallé

OBE – TV Presenter, Diversity Expert & Award-winning Author

With a background of Marine Biology, Economics and fisheries management, Conflict resolution and NGO management, Marta is now the Executive Secretary of the Low Impact Fishers of Europe, an EU-wide platform of associations of small-scale fishers committed to fishing in a low impact manner. LIFE's mission is to unite small-scale fishers to achieve fair fisheries, healthy seas and vibrant communities, by providing a voice and representation at EU level and support on the ground to become actors of change.

Gerry De Ruiter

OBE – TV Presenter, Diversity Expert & Award-winning Author

He represents a group of small-scale coastal fisheries. They have been asking for a level playing field for years, but the government has not listened to them. The aquatic resources belong to all of us but not for the enrichment of a few. Subsidies are focused on large industrial-scale fishing, instead of focusing on better and less harmful practices.

Artists

Bruno Sitton

OBE – TV Presenter, Diversity Expert & Award-winning Author

Bruno Sitton is a purpose-driven individual dedicated to creating meaningful experiences that merge entertainment, music services and wellness. From an early age, he has immersed himself in the practices of Zen, cultivating a daily meditation practice and experimenting how to integrate it into daily Western life. Inspired by his global travels and encounters with diverse cultures, Bruno has delved into various disciplines such as the ancient Chinese tradition of tea service, sound healing, music industry, yoga philosophy, and embodiment practices. Bruno has crafted immersive, meditative experiences that serve as a catalyst for others to connect with the present moment and undergo transformative journeys. He views his core purpose as helping people rediscover their true source of creativity, power, responsibility, and capacity for love. Through his work, he aims to ignite a spark of inspiration and deeper connection in individuals who yearn to feel more vibrant and alive. As Bruno joins forces with Patagonia for this purposeful campaign for the Ocean, he brings his unique blend of entertainment, music services, and transformative experiences to the forefront. His intention is to inspire individuals to connect with the magnificence of the ocean and take meaningful action, nurturing a collective consciousness of togetherness and responsibility.

Artists

Naomi Grant

OBE – TV Presenter, Diversity Expert & Award-winning Author

Naomi Grant is a personal, motivating, sometimes shocking, teaching and always honest writing performer. She likes to talk about topics that people don't like to talk about. Her uninhibited attitude has already brought her to places such as IFFR Black Rebels, 3FM, the Rotterdam and Amsterdam Schouwburg, Mag het licht aan festival, ABN Amro and the Bijenkorf.

Naomi also likes to take on the challenge by summarizing an event in spoken word live, such as the LGBTQI+ talk show FRESH, or by writing a personal text for a birthday, pregnancy, or employee of the year. Her lyrics encourage reflection and dialogue because Naomi thinks “To heal the world, we first have to heal ourselves” (Michael Jackson).

In addition to writing and performing herself, Naomi also gives creative writing workshops for (mainly) young people between 12 and 21 years old. She thinks it is important that young people learn to express themselves in a creative way at an early age. She has noticed that it gives young people more self-confidence and makes it easier to talk about taboo subjects.

That love of learning about climate justice stayed with her while she worked in public relations, prompting her to leave the PR industry and explore her other passions. Now her focus is with Power Shift Network, which aims to shift power from systemically racist institutions to young folks and young people of color working to mitigate climate change. In her free time, you’ll most likely find her roller skating, working on a freelance writing project or watching Japanese reality TV.  Find her on Instagram @power_shift, @powershiftnet on Twitter.

Lindsey Halvorson

VP, Marketing

Raised in Vail, Colorado, Lindsey grew up in the beautiful, snowy Gore Range. When she was not snowboarding, she was hiking with her black lab or biking through the valley. As Lindsey got older, she began to see the effects of rising temperatures on her mountain community from disappearing snowpack to raging wildfires. After going to school in Washington, DC and working for The Climate Reality Project, she landed back in her home state at POW. Lindsey has helped Protect Our Winters build a grassroots volunteer program as well as run both policy and Get-Out-the-Vote campaigns.
